How to get mushrooms to pin

Pinning is the moment your fully colonized block shifts from growing mycelium to forming the first mushrooms. It's the most critical — and most frustrating — transition in the whole grow. Here's what actually triggers it, and how to troubleshoot when it stalls.

What is pinning?

Pinning (or pin set) is when your mycelium forms primordia — tiny hyphal knots that develop into the mushroom caps and stems you'll harvest. Before that moment the block is just white mycelium. After it, you'll see the first pin heads, sometimes within 3–5 days.

The mycelium doesn't fruit at random. It reads the environment for signals that tell it: "I've reached the surface, conditions are right, now fruit." Your job as a grower is to deliver those signals reliably, on demand.

The 4 pinning triggers

Four environmental conditions, working together, trigger pin formation in nearly every gourmet species:

1. CO₂ drop (fresh air exchange)

This is the single most important trigger and the most commonly missed. During colonization, CO₂ builds up inside the substrate as mycelium metabolizes. When that CO₂ finally drops — because the block has been moved to a fruiting chamber with real airflow — the mycelium senses it has broken through to open air. Most gourmet species need CO₂ to fall below 800–1,500 ppm to initiate pins.

A still, sealed tent or box with no active fresh-air exchange can keep CO₂ well above 5,000 ppm — four to six times the threshold. That's the #1 reason a healthy-looking block stalls indefinitely.

2. High relative humidity

Primordia need moisture to form and develop. Most gourmet species pin best at 85–95% RH. Below 80%, the surface of the block dries out before pins can anchor, and the forming primordia abort. Misting the walls of your chamber (never directly on the block face) raises humidity without soaking the fruiting surface.

3. Fresh air exchange (FAE)

FAE and CO₂ reduction are two sides of the same coin: fresh air flushes out CO₂ and brings oxygen. For oyster, lion's mane, and chestnut mushrooms, high FAE is non-negotiable — still air prolongs colonization but actively prevents pinning. Even a small fan cycling fresh air through a tent a few times per day makes a measurable difference.

4. Temperature drop

A 5–10°C drop from colonization temperature to fruiting temperature signals the end of a warm season and the start of conditions that favor fruiting. This is the primary trigger for shiitake (which requires a dramatic cold shock) and king oyster, and a helpful nudge for many other species. It's not strictly required for oyster mushrooms, but moving blocks from a warm colonization room (~24°C) to a cooler fruiting space (~16°C) reliably speeds up the first pin set.

The order matters. Humidity without FAE will cause long spindly stems and no caps. FAE without humidity will dry out the forming pins. You need both — and you need CO₂ low enough for the mycelium to receive the signal in the first place.

Species-by-species pinning conditions

Each species has its own threshold for what "correct fruiting conditions" means. These numbers match our Fruiting Conditions tool:

How to induce your first pin set

  1. Confirm full colonization. The entire substrate should be white and firm. Move to fruiting too early and the block stalls or contaminates. For shiitake: also wait for the brown skin to form, which can take weeks after visual colonization.
  2. Score or open the fruiting surface. Oyster blocks typically fruit from a cut or hole in the bag facing a grow space. Lion's mane blocks fruit best from a single small opening. Shiitake blocks fruit across the whole surface once the skin breaks.
  3. Drop the temperature. Move from a colonization space (~24°C) to a fruiting space (~15–18°C). For shiitake, fully submerge the block in cold water (10–15°C) for 12–24 hours.
  4. Raise humidity to 85–95%. Mist the walls of your fruiting chamber twice daily. Keep the block surface damp but not waterlogged. A hygrometer in the chamber is essential — you're guessing without one.
  5. Open the fresh air. Run a small fan on a timer or fan controller to cycle air through the fruiting chamber at least 4–6 times per day. This is the most critical adjustment for blocks that stall.
  6. Add indirect light. 12 hours of ambient or LED light per day helps the mycelium orient pins toward the surface. A simple timer handles this.
  7. Wait. At correct conditions, oyster mushrooms typically pin within 3–7 days. Lion's mane in 5–10 days. King oyster and shiitake in 7–14 days. If nothing appears after 14 days, troubleshoot using the table below.

Pinning and the fruiting stage timeline

Pinning is the third of four stages in the mushroom lifecycle. Understanding where it fits helps you set the right expectations:

  1. Inoculation — substrate meets spawn; the clock starts.
  2. Colonization — mycelium spreads through the substrate (days to weeks depending on species and spawn rate).
  3. Pinning (initiation) — the block enters fruiting conditions; primordia form within days if conditions are right.
  4. Fruiting — pins develop into full mushrooms over 5–10 days before harvest.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my mushrooms pin?

The most common cause is CO₂ too high — not enough fresh air exchange in your fruiting chamber. A fully colonized block sitting in still air can accumulate CO₂ well above 5,000 ppm, four to six times the threshold for pinning. Increase FAE first. If that doesn't fix it, check that temperature has dropped into the correct fruiting range and that humidity is at 85%+. If conditions are correct and nothing appears after 14 days, inspect the block for contamination.

What triggers mushroom pinning?

Pinning is triggered by a combination of four conditions: a CO₂ drop below 800–1,500 ppm (achieved through fresh air exchange), high relative humidity (85–95%), adequate FAE, and for many species a temperature drop of 5–10°C from colonization temperature. The mycelium interprets these signals as "I've reached open air — time to fruit."

How long does it take for mushrooms to pin after colonization?

At correct fruiting conditions: oyster mushrooms pin in 3–7 days; lion's mane in 5–10 days; king oyster in 7–14 days; shiitake in 7–14 days after cold shock. If no pins form after 14 days under correct conditions, the most likely cause is CO₂ still too high or the block not being at 100% colonization when moved to fruiting.

Do mushrooms need light to pin?

Light helps orient pin formation — the mycelium uses it to sense the surface direction — but it is not the primary trigger. Most species will pin in complete darkness if CO₂, humidity, and FAE are correct. Twelve hours of indirect ambient or LED light per day is a good default. Enoki (the commercial long-stem form) is a deliberate exception: grown in low light and high CO₂ to produce elongated pale stems.

How do I know if my block is ready to fruit?

A block is ready when it is 100% colonized (fully white, firm, no soft or green spots) with no contamination. For shiitake: wait additionally for the brown mycelial skin to develop across the surface, which can take several weeks after visual colonization. Moving to fruiting before full colonization risks stalling the block or creating conditions that favor contaminants.
